jb,

Ya know, that question requires a long answer.
First, I think that the Republicans had no
choice but to pick Bob Dole. He had all the
connections. It was interesting watching
Gramm, Forbes, Buchanon, and Keyes try to
build support but in the face of a guy who
had spent a lifetime in Washington, it was
almost an unwinable situation against all of
his connections. I wanted Dole to pick a
woman running mate such as Christine Todd-
Whitman so that he could win. He chose to
lose with Jack Kemp.

It is also important to bear in mind that
the Republicans had this thorn in their
side named Ross Perot. In '92 he actually
got 20% of the vote. In '96 he got 8% and
most polls indicate that he got his votes
from the ranks of Republicans. Bill Clinton
never even got a simple majority...46% in
'92, and 49.6% in '96. For all practical
purposes, Bill Clinton does not have the
level of popularity that the media claims
he does. He will pay for that with the House
vote of Impeachment today.
