The fact that you (and I at that) do not really care for the banner ads does not render them unipmportant to advertisers. I mean the newspapers are still full of ads nobody really reads... or do you really remember what ads where in yesterday's paper? And if so, how often is that the case. Not too often with me...

I even think that increased bandwith will actually be good for advertises in that it will enable them (and "content" providers as well) to push more bits down the line, generating more "impressive" (data-rich) banners. I'll hate it just like on TV, but what can you do?

There is no reason to believe that Internet ad volume will not go the way of TV, namely increase and get ever more expensive. It's about media reaching consumers eyes and the 'Net is attracting lots of "new" people.
