Micronet was a good opportunistic acquisition. Their cash constraints were related to Apple's cancellation of the Power Express when Jobs took over. Micronet had a large committment of resources to that project. Ampex will benefit. Good article in Datamation.....
datamation.com

This is a high high growth area. Ampex now plays at the high end with DST and low end with Micronet. Also, re DST I have heard from several sources that Ampex has landed orders with several major content providers to the worldwide cable and satellite tv markets.

Also re the Webhost acquisition, check out the current issue of Red Herring on the expected growth in Web Services. A good one to read is the interview with Bill Gurley. My guess is that it is a good road map for what Ampex hopes to do in providing digital imaging services.

I think people need to reflect on what a tremendous opportunity it now is to have cash to make acquisitions. Thank God they didn't blow their wad too soon this year as a number of armchair quarterbacks have been whining about. It was right to pay the interest and wait for the environment to come your way. Had they waited to raise money in the high yield market, guess what, can't do it now. Read anything about the high yield market and it is at a standstill. So it was right to get the money and it was right to sit on it and wait for the best acquisitions to pop to the surface. Right now you have excellent situations where companies didn't get the capital they needed. Now they must have it. This is going to yield a nice acquisition in my opinion. It's a nice combination with Ampex's technical whizzes who know who has the best technology out there and a seasoned financial team who knows how to structure acquisitions and deals.

I don't know guys - my experience is that in a terrible market like this, trying to call a bottom on the same day a stock is making a new low on very light (historical) volume is a mistake.

My guess, barring major positive news (and how often does that happen?) is that AXC will make its low below $1. We'll see a breakdown into a major market selloff when a large seller throws in the towel.

The appearance of that seller will cause a spike low and then a quick reversal as he cleans up and buyers realize that was it.

Taking a wild guess - a low at 3/4 on a high volume day with the close around 1 - 1 1/8.

Hey, let's start a pool.

10/8/98 : Unfortunately I think the low now will be below .75 and we won't see a snapback anytime soon.

Steve

>>One caveat however, from the formation of the current base, there is the strong possibility of a false shakeout. A 2 to 3 trading day punch below 1.00 (especially if there is an October 98 panic). Needless to say, one keeps his cool in this eventuality and does not become unglued by this. <<

Thanks for your response. I hope you are correct and that today's 35% decline represents only a false shakeout. Keeping cool so far ....
