I am familiar enough with that kind of elbow-your-way-to-the-cameras person to know that I don't want to be one, and that they don't deserve our admiration or "esteem." My father has taught for many years at a university with only an occasional quote in the NY Times or Boston Globe although he is considered an expert in his field by the rest of the world. He has a colleague (who shall remain nameless) who, within a few years of arriving on the scene, based on her own ability to sell herself to news producers, has gotten a one-on-one with Koppel on Nightline and a whole host of other shows as an "expert." She is not even the "Professor" she says she is because she is not a tenured faculty member. I mentioned Beschloss, who does not even have a doctorate, and his claim to fame is that he held a conference where he got all the former first ladies in a room at the same time. That's scholarship??!?!? It makes me ill to think that people like her, Beschloss, and Turley are the ones that are recognized by the public as our experts. And the same goes for politicians. For example, I'm torn in the Senate race in NY because I know that Chuck Schumer is worst kind of publicity whore, credit-taker there is in Congress, and is despicable. But that despicable trait is probably the only reason he has a chance against Al D'Amato (a man that makes my skin crawl). They're both disgusting but for different reasons. What's a person to do? I hate media whores, and that hate transcends political boundaries, points of view, and even my purported envy for them.
