Ibexx,

Good post. I like to visit this thread from time to time, but rarely have time to post myself.

I have held Cisco for about 4 years now, and have experienced many of these scary sell offs. I have held through them all and have been rewarded accordingly.

As for future stock selection, it is important to understand the impact of the deflationary environment that we now find ourselves in. The rules have changed and we as investors must adjust to them.

Companies in commodity type industries, oil, timber, etc., will have hard times. The companies that will prosper are the ones that provide increased productivity in their products. Networking allows companies to be more efficient. As such, Cisco will continue to prosper since companies will be forced to upgrade and expand their networks to stay competitive in this new environment.

Now, all this money that has been going out of the market these last few weeks must find a home at some point in time. Bonds and Gold won't cut it. As such, I suspect companies like Cisco will be rewarded with high future multiples due to their earnings consistency and the lack of good investment alternatives. I suspect that the next nifty fifty will revolve around Cisco, Lucent, Microsoft, etc., for these reasons.

If this is true, we could be coming up on another of those fantastic buying opportunities for Cisco stock.

Time will tell.

Darrell

<<Glad you remembered me from the Spring of 97.>>

Ibexx: Yes, it was a lesson well learned. Csco in low 40's (20's split-adjusted), me saying I was holding for lower, you saying this is an outstanding opportunity. I knew it was a great opportunity but I wanted to try and squeeze a few more points off the buy. That was the exact day the bottom was hit, Csco skyrocketed, and the rest is history. It's remained a lesson for me on trying to pick the bottom that is as applicable today as it was back then.

Looks like market is set to open sharply lower.

Best. ...Tim
