HK names international panel to advise on strategic issues.

By Quak Hiang Whai in Hongkong

The Hongkong government yesterday appointed a group of distinguished international business and corporate leaders to advise the territory's chief executive on strategic issues concerning the long-term development of Hongkong from an international perspective.

The task of the high-powered group known as Council of International Advisers appears similar to the role of a panel of international advisers which meets once a year to advise Singapore on strategic economic issues. Even some of the members of both panels are drawn from the same multinationals.

Chaired by Hongkong's Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa, the group of 15 influential corporate giants from major multinationals in the developed economies will meet at least once a year and will hold its first meeting next January.

The international advisers include former chairman of Federal Reserve Bank of the US Paul Volcker, chairman of supervisory board of Siemens AG Karl-Hermann Baumann, former chairman of HSBC Holdings William Purves, chairman of News Corporation Rupert Murdoch, and chairman of General Electric John Welch. Two Japanese chairmen -- Tasuku Takagaki from Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi and Shoichiro Toyoda of Toyota Motor -- also sit on the council.
