Bankers Meet Under Dark Cloud With Silver-Service Lining

washingtonpost.com

<< Hours after World Bank President James D. Wolfensohn beseeched the world's bankers to remember "the dark, searing images of desperation, hopelessness and decline" among the world's poor, some of the financiers in town for the World Bank and International Monetary Fund meetings were nibbling pea pancakes topped with caviar at an evening reception hosted by the National Commercial Bank of Saudi Arabia at the National Air and Space Museum.

A four-piece jazz band, one of two at the soiree, played "It Had to Be You" next to part of a Douglas DC-7. Walking by the buffet spread featuring trays of clams on the half shell, bowls of shrimp and platters of lamb, a guest could catch snippets of conversation: "This Bank of New England thing . . ." "We paid $100 million for . . ." "Here, I'll give you my card . . ." >>

At least they are enjoying themselves.

Hi Simon,
