Studies show that over time 60+% of the fluxuation of stock held in a different currency is due to currency fluxuation. In the case of a bond your whole years yield could be wiped out in a matter of hours.
Obviously, it can be tricky but the double whammy effect as I call it,
played when the security and the currency are in your favor can be a site to behold. In '85 thru '87 for instance, simple international funds had gains in excess of 300%...mainly due to currency fluxuation.
Even Alan Greenspan made a bundle playing the dollar drop at that time, concerted by the G5.
With the strong dollar foreigners have been enjoying the best of both worlds investing in our markets until recently. The pendulum swings both ways.
