Thread,

Awhile ago MikeM was posting earning warnings blamed on the Asian crisis. Now maybe we want to post layoffs blamed same.

Here in MA during the past month are the four I remember...

Gillette
Thermo
Intel
Raytheon

all blamed on Asia and there were a few others.

Add this on top layoffs at

Compaq (Digital)
Data General (Business focus to Dell)
Bose (Moving South)

It will have an effect, despite what our governor says. That said, I'm hiring and I'm glad to now see some talent in the labor pool. Others are hiring too. Many companies needed this addition to our labor pool to keep on growing. Sun should be opening up their huge new building soon too.

But all this news (Asia, layoffs, dollar, etc.) is having an effect. Money managers are not the only folks who see cash as king. The dinner topic conversations have changed, and saving money and paying down debt seem to be king. Only the young and the brave now describe "saving money" as maxing out their stock contributions.

Nationally we are seeing more layoffs and our unemployment rate grows, but due to labor force growth exceeding employment growth. Of course in times like these one layoff may mean two job seekers as the stay-at-home spouse too starts to look.

I still expect a record Christmas selling season, but those animal spirits do seem puppyish at the moment.

Cheers,
Lee
