I am somewhat disappointed that it is taking 5 years for Intel to go from the P6 to the next core (call it P7). Recall that it took Intel just 2 years to go from P5 to P6, because they had two complete design teams working in parallel.

At the time the 200Mhz PPro was introduced, it had the highest integer performance of *any* microprocessor (including the Alpha). That was Intel's finest moment.

Apparently the team that designed the P5 was diverted to the IA64 project. Maybe this will work out for the best, but it looks like a tactical error to me.

It will be interesting to see how the AMD K7 compares with the P6.
