Microsoft ships new version of Windows CE

By Todd Spangler, ZDNet

Microsoft Corp. announced today that it has shipped the third major release of Windows CE, called
Windows CE Handheld PC Professional Edition, to 11 manufacturers of portable computing devices.

The new version, formerly known as Jupiter, enhances remote access to corporate data and includes
new hardware options for larger display types, touch-screen and mouse-pointing devices and multiple
processors.

"These are primarily e-mail devices," said Roger Gulrajani, group product manager for PC Companion
Products at Microsoft. "We really see these as devices that are going to be used in corporate settings.
We want to expand the way that people use these devices for connecting to a Microsoft Exchange
Server or a [Lotus Development Corp.] Domino server."

Windows CE Handheld PC Pro devices will be demonstrated next week at the Microsoft Professional
Developer's Conference in Denver. They will be initially available later this year, with widespread
availability expected in 1999, Microsoft said.

A new version of the Pocket Outlook mail client in Windows CE Handheld PC Pro adds support for the
Internet Message Access Protocol standard to the product's current ability to handle Post Office
Protocol mail. It will include the ability to access directories through the Lightweight Directory Access
Protocol.

Windows CE Handheld PC Pro also will feature Pocket Access, a lightweight database application, as
well as provide ActiveX Data Objects, which will let Windows CE developers write applications that
access corporate databases.

Microsoft said the new version of Windows CE will be able to synchronize data between a Windows CE
device and a desktop PC faster than previous versions.

The 11 vendors that are planning to release products based on Windows CE Handheld PC Pro are
Casio Computer Company Ltd., Compaq Computer Corp., Fujitsu Ltd., Hewlett-Packard Co., Hitachi
Ltd., LG Electronics Inc., NEC Corp., NTS Computer Systems Ltd., Samsung Electronics, Sharp Corp.
and Vadem.
