Mark: Are there any Companies that have Edge switches that can convert any known Protocol to a standard Cell based protocol with adequate compression, & buffers for speed etc.

Is the next wave of switching going to involve heavy standardisation or are we going to see more Protocols.

Thanks.

[Compaq]

The following is a response from "rudedog" on the Compaq thread regarding the Compaq/Cabletron product issue. I'd encourage anyone who has further confirmation ( or not ) to please post. As you may or may not know the Digital contract was reported to be about $1 Billion over three years. We need to see that Compaq is going to honor that commitment as it represents upwards of 1/4 of revenue for that period. This issue has a MAJOR impact on Cabletron's revenue projections.....

Thnx Mike

"rudedogs" Comments:

Compaq purchased Thomas Conrad and Networth in October 1995. They have
developed a pretty complete line of ethernet cards and swithches for 10/100 using the
networth switch technology and combined technical assets. these teams have also done
some gigabit work.

Digital, and later Cabletron (after Digital sold technical and people assets to them)
were much farther along on both high speed switches and related management
software. CPQ therefore has combined the best of the high end technology from
Cabletron with the midrange and NIC technology from their in-house team. I don't
think that CPQ plans to move their technology development into that high end space as
long as the Cabletron relationship is working well.
