Blumenthal's Brigade

Add the Monicagate grand jurors to White House assistant Sid
Blumenthal's fan club -- already jammed with current and former
presidential aides, Congressional Republicans and members of
independent counsel Ken Starr's staff.

It seems the grand jury was a mite miffed when, after his Feb. 26
appearance, Blumenthal stood on the courthouse steps and complained
that Starr's minions "demanded to know what I had told reporters and
what reporters had said to me about Ken Starr's prosecutors. If they think
they have intimidated me, they have failed."

Blumenthal admitted talking to reporters about Starr's lawyers but denied
any White House plot to smear them.

At his second appearance June 25, the grand jury foreperson voiced
"some serious concerns" about Blumenthal's alfresco oration, according to
the latest 4,610-page document dump by Congress.

The foreperson (hey, gender-neutral titles are rarely elegant) upbraided
Blumenthal, saying, "An inaccurate representation of the events that
happened were retold on the steps of the courthouse. We would hope that
you will understand the seriousness of our work, and not in any way to use
it for any purpose other than the purpose that is intended, and that you
would really represent us the way that events happened in this room."
