no, it has been happening for years(maybe for ever) - often near el 'nino or la' nino. happened in mid 70's while I was working for major electronics firm, our communications with home office in dallas was impossible for a several days, with data being worse than voice.

Depends on the size of the meteorites and their composition. If their core is nickel-iron and they're basketball size ... we're in for a nasty hail storm. -vbg-

... oops my mistake ... someone here just corrected me. When these extra-terrestrial fragments hit the surface they are meteorites. When they enter the atmosphere they are termed meteors. And outside the planets atmosphere they are meteoroids.
