<< Unfortunately, smoking is killing and damaging the health of millions of people.>>

And the industry is well represented by people on both sides of the aisle. For example, Al Gore. Examples of Republicans have already been posted. This issue is not a partisan issue, thank goodness, so there may be some hope. Funny thing though, I'm more of a Libertarian. Even if smoking is bad for you, I think you should be able to do it. I shouldn't have to pay your medical bills, though. Restrict advertising? Okay, I could go for that, to prevent people from becoming addicted before they really knew the score.

Clinton and his friends blew it with the Tobacco Tax program. Initially, their stated goal was to tax tobacco to recover costs for patients on Medicare/Medicaid and to keep teens from getting into smoking. Clinton started going into all manner of programs to be funded by this tax which kept getting bigger and bigger. He knows as well as anyone that the bill won't prevent kids from smoking. If they don't start smoking with legal cigarrettes, they will start up by smoking pot or by smoking bootleg cigarrettes. Clinton and his friends got too greedy and lost the original message which was received favorably.
