<In the high-tech arena being #1 has a big advantage, see previous post for Ciena's customer list. Also, bandwidth needs are going to skyrocket once the cable modems and DSL are put to use world wide. The only way to increase bandwidth for existing fiber is to use DWDM and Ciena is #1 and their products are proven becasue they have been field tested in production for about 2 years now. Ciena president emphasized this two days ago in a Telecom conference that he still sees strong demand from upstart Telecom companies. The new product that will be out soon support IP/ATM over WDM directly and thus eliminating a lot of overhead of Sonet SDH. The potential revenue for this kind of product will be much bigger than the existing DWDM mkt, why ? because by supporting IP/ATM directly over DWDM, routers such as CISCO 12000 can hook into the Ciena box and take advantage of efficient bandwidth directly over DWDM using WD switching for IP. There are other devices that can directly connect such as ATM swicthes (ASND 550) and multiservice-ATM access switches (CSCO 8800).> imo, this may be out within 3-5 months time frame
