>>forty megapixel is important to camera enthusiasts and competes well against flash<<

Hmmm... I guess in order to compete with Flash, you have to have a working unit. And Exile at TMF IOM thread tried to cheer up the Bulls today by saying that as of now, Vapor! prototype production yields were as much as 90% now.

This means that fully 10% of Vapor! units were failing right off the assembly line. I can't wait for the reliability complaints from consumers after a day at the beach or a small vacation. Has this thing even been Beta tested yet? I bet Iomega skips the beta testing and instead pulls a SparQ in order to deliver within the repeatedly-promised "Second Half of 1998" timeframe. If Iomega were to properly beta test them, delivery probably wouldn't be until January or February next year. Folks, the people buying these things (that means you, Iomega Investors) are going to be unwitting Beta-testers. Better put Iomega's Customer Support # on your speed dial now, and have pen and paper ready to write down an Return Authorization #.

OEM testing is another 6 months or so, correct? Then another 6 months for potential new models to include the units. So we're looking at potentially 1 year (at the soonest) that Vapor! could be included inside any device. And by that time, Flash prices will have collapsed even more. You can get 40MB Flash Cards for $150 right now. 1 year from now? You can probably get reliable, rugged 40MB Flash cards for well under $75.

Vapor! is going nowhere. Iomega knows it. They have been keeping very quiet about it, except for the ancient news release about the already-known Flash Card reader. Castlewood has been very good at keeping its potential customers updated as to when Beta testing was being done, and how well it was proceeding. Iomega is deathly quiet about Beta testing.
