Our founding fathers had the wisdom to give us a form of government designed so that no part of it could gain exclusive control of the reigns of power. That was the brilliant idea. And this plays into my belief that we have a good government because the people that run it spend most of their energies fighting each other for control. Imagine what would happen if all three branches of the government were always in lock-step agreement on important issues. They wouldn't be paying a buck for a haircut, it would be free. And they would all have a guaranteed pension even if they only served for a single term.

"effective government" isn't an oxymoron, it's a very dangerous thing, particularly in a pluralistic society.
