Chip stocks came off the lows of the day, buoyed by the year's first report of rising global sales and anticipation of short-term strength as earnings season approaches. Worldwide semiconductor revenue increased 1.5 percent sequentially in August, the Semiconductor Industry Association reported. Sales in the Americas increased 3.4 percent from July levels, while European sales rose 0.7 percent and Asia-Pacific sales increased 3.1 percent. Japan continued to lag, as revenues decreased 2.2 percent from July.

Analysts expect the group to gain momentum in the near-term as it heads into the fourth quarter, typically its strongest period of the year. Industry observers believe the relatively small number of third-quarter warnings coupled with lowered expectations indicate most chipmakers will meet consensus estimates for the quarter.
