A few days ago the dollar was worth 147 yen. As I write this, it's worth 118 yen. That means Japanese can buy American products much cheaper. We still get our dollar, but the Japanese only pay 118 yen for that dollar product. The same is true of other countries, to varying degrees. This will make American companies much more competitive. This will somewhat offset how American is affected by the economic downturn in many parts of the world. Lucent is very much a global company, so devaluation of the dollar is very good for Lucent and its shareholders.....unless those shareholders are foreigners whose currency is appreciating against the dollar.
