BB, [edited] I've seen bare $499 systems advertised in the paper already. They typically have 16-32 MB RAM, a 56 kbps modem and a 2 -3 GB HD. But most of the sub-$1000 systems advertised are bundles with monitor and printer for $900-1000.

A new twist for the cheapos in the article: customers pay for support
after 15 days. They may well make on service charges what they
give up on hardware profits. Especially since these buyers are
not likely to be techies who fix their own problems.
