HARMONIC LIGHTWAVES IS RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF SILICON VALLEY'S 50 FASTEST GROWING COMPANIES

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – October 7, 1998 – For the second consecutive year, Harmonic Lightwaves, Inc. (Nasdaq: HLIT) has been recognized as one of the fifty fastest growing technology companies in Silicon Valley by Deloitte & Touche, a leading accounting and management consulting firm. Harmonic came in at number 36 this year, based on the 1,009 percent revenue growth the company achieved between 1993 and 1997. Revenue grew from $6.7 million to $74.4 million during this period.

"Making this list twice shows the success we at Harmonic have had in increasing our share of the hotly-contested telecommunications market. We attribute this success to the skill and determination of our employees in developing advanced products and providing superior customer service," said Tony Ley, president, chairman and CEO of Harmonic Lightwaves. "Moving forward, our latest generation of products position us to further expand into new markets and to continue our success."

In the year since the company's last appearance in the "Silicon Valley Technology Fast 50," Harmonic has introduced several new products, including the PWRBlazerTM Scaleable Node and the METROLinkTM Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) system. Both products are being used today by several of the nation's leading cable television operators to cost-effectively offer subscribers high-speed Internet access, digital video and telephony services.

Deloitte & Touche, together with Joint Venture: Silicon Valley Network, has recognized Silicon Valley's fastest growing technology companies for the past four years. To be considered, a company must:

• have been in business for at least five years,

• have had revenues of at least $50,000 in 1993, and at least $1 million in 1997,

• be a "technology" company,

• have its headquarters in Silicon Valley.
