from Japanese press: Clinton welcomes yen surge against dollar

U.S. President Bill Clinton on Thursday welcomed the Japanese
yen's surge against the U.S. dollar as ''a good thing'' that could
strengthen U.S. industry.
''The yen got too weak. And it led, for example, to
breathtaking increases in imports of Japanese steel, which hurt a lot
of our people, our industry and our workers, who were clearly
competitive internationally,'' Clinton said before meeting his
economic team on federal budget issues.
