"many mutual fund managers who get paid to perform by buying low and selling high can not beat the S&P 500 over the long run."

Mutual fund managers are handcuffed by their prospectuses and fund fees. Not to mention the regulation that prevents them from using more than 5% of the fund's equity to initiate a position.

"If you know someone who has been able to beat the S&P over a long period of time(2 to 10 years), then you know the exception and not the rule!"

Hmm, I thought you said it was impossible? I'd be the first to agree that it's not a common thing. Most folks don't have the time required to put into it. Kids, a house, a full time career (not in the market) are all distractions. Most folks are better off in index funds, but that has to do with the low fees available and the fact that the funds get paid whether they lose or win.

I do know of a couple of folks who have beaten the SPX in the last 2 to 10 year period. JJ Cramer is one of them is one of them, BTW.
