There is depression in the Far East, but I think the Western economies are mature and stable enought to escape that fate.

That said, this stock slide is going to slow consumption here. This decline is a wake-up for folks with no savings plan other than the market...a clear reversal of fortune.

Upscale-home and luxury-goods sales are already stalling. Capital spending has to slow now. Hello 1991. If we had an inventory bubble I'd say, "Hello 1974," but we don't.
