Alex will indeed say that in physics you get equal and opposite reactions. And if this was indeed a valid way to study human behavior anthropology would be a subset of physics. Friedrich Hayek's The Counter-Revolution of Science is an excellent little book on the epistemological error of seeking to use the functions of physical science to describe human behavior.

As for attributing tunnel vision to me, well, I prefer to stick to arguing evidence, as ad hominems have no value. I haven't portrayed Somoza as a good guy, but I do question the Left's claims of higher virtue. The Nicaraguan Permanent Commission on Human Rights, CPDH, was instrumental in documenting Somoza's crimes and making them public. When Somoza fell in 1979 Jose Estaban Gonzalez didn't go out of business, he started documenting human rights abuses by the Sandanista regime. The CPDH documented the disappearance of 785 people taken into custody by the Sandanistas from July 1979 to September 1980. Commandante Tomas Borge acknowledged in September 1980 that people were being abused and killed while in Sandanista arrest, and explained that Sandanista State Security had some members who weren't following instructions. But as late as 1982 113 people vanished after arrest by the Sandanistas, and 209 in 1983. Mass graves were found in regions were people disappeared, in La Arrocera, Catarina, Leon, and in the crater of the Santiago volcano.

The Right never had political tourist vacations to support Somoza. But the Left certainly supported the Sandanistas. There were organized vacation tours so you could show your solidarity with the Revolution, and pick coffee, or hang out with the Commandantes if you had sufficient status. I recall the Hollywood left proudly displaying their close association with the Sandanista leaders. The CPDH's reports were ignored. The lack of a free press was ignored. The lack of elections, or even rival political parties was ignored. The Sandanista policy of domestic spying with neoghborhood block committes was ignored. I guess I just don't understand leftist claims of superior morality. It may be my fault, but I don't see it.

The election in Nicaragua was forced upon the Sandanistas as the price for the US letting up on the Contra war. This election hardly bestowed any credit on the Sandanistas, as they had no intention of having an election on their own.
