Al: Your trading/investment style is totally different than mine, so it's difficult to recommend one stock or another (except N - of course). I'm basically a buy and hold mid-term to long-term holder because I look for value stocks that are out of favor, or a stock that has a compelling story. I bought N originally for the latter reason, and today both reasons hold true. (-: (This market has been a lesson in humility for most of us.) I do what I'm comfortable with and what has worked for me over time, with some variation as experience (hard knocks) teaches me. Each of us needs to do the same. If you really want to hold oil for the long term, then you're probably best off with a sector fund like Fidelity Energy Select (?) that will give you a balanced oil portfolio.(I have to check exact name of Fund, if you're interested. Regarding your reasons for selecting the 3 you mention, I don't recommend them as criteria. To begin with the earning estimates and PE are misleading. They are/will be much lower as daily rates plummet, especially land rigs and shallow water (Gulf of Mexico). Many of these rigs are being cold stacked. The price of oil needs to be at a stable $15pb at a minimum. $16-$17 for the drillers to do well, and $18+ for them to explode. I'm betting that oil will sustain a price of mid$16 this winter. OPEC is targeting $17 as a minimum, but there are too many factors for anyone to give a price range. I could go on and on, but this is the N Board. If you wish, send me a "Private Message" on the SI thread, or e-mail me. I don't own any of the 3 you mention, but have been watching MRL (which is Marine Drilling [formerly MDCO on Nasdq]). Regarding on how long the world will be dependent on oil, I should live until it is no longer dependent on oil. I wish the same for you. :-) N as a long term investment? When I am old and gray I'll still be holding some N in my portfolio (unless CM "partners" with someone and the name changes.). BerniE NEXTEL x,xxx
