October 9, 1998 08:00 AM

ROCHESTER, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 9, 1998--

Platform Now Holds 25 Percent of Worldwide Revenue

Cabletron Systems CS today announced its network management platform SPECTRUM has earned the number two position in the SNMP network management platform category. According to a September International Data Corporation report titled the Future of Network Management Platforms, 1998-2003, SPECTRUM has 25 percent of the total worldwide revenue in this space and has advanced to the number two position for 1997 from the number three position in 1996.

This five percent gain puts SPECTRUM only 1.3 percent behind the current leader, HP Openview and further widens its advantage over IBM's Tivoli TME. "SPECTRUM's core appeal is its network know-how. Intimate knowledge of enterprise and broadband network equipment (management) technologies is a key asset for Cabletron." wrote Elisabeth Rainge in the IDC report.

"Three years ago we displaced two market leading management platforms with SPECTRUM," said Dave O'Shea, Manager of Network Operations at Williams Communications a $1.5 billion, North American, single-source provider of business communications equipment and multimedia integration services for data, voice, video, and advanced applications. "We found SPECTRUM to be the solution most capable of handling a critical part of one of our most important strategic services -- remote network management. SPECTRUM was the best fit because of its scalability, flexibility, and history of backward-compatible upgrades during the evolution of the system."

"Cabletron's software business is growing rapidly," said Cabletron's Vice-President of Worldwide Software Sales, Terry Seymour. "Our internal software organization is blossoming and it's fostered a new industry leading solutions approach to software sales. SPECTRUM is penetrating the market as a complete solution that maps a customized set of software and services to the strategic business goals of an organization."
