1990 was over by just-about now and had pretty-much a V bottom, 1973-74 and 1980-82 were long, drawn-out affairs (with several counter-trend rallies lasting weeks or months) that cleared themselves out by attrition. They were what are called "secular" bear markets, the worst kind...tied to major financal imbalances (like inflation, inventory gluts, oil price shocks, political upheaval). 1990 was a "cyclical" bear market, a kinder version tied to primarily to a business cycle and the Kuwait scare.

Amazon.com to launch service in Germany on Oct 19

Reuters Story - October 09, 1998 17:20

HAMBURG, Oct 9 (Reuters) - Internet retailing group Amazon.com Inc. will launch a service in Germany on October 19,
advertising agency FCB/Wilkens Technics said on Friday.

The agency said the online book and music retailer wanted to become as well known in Germany as it was in the United States.

"The big challenge for us is to make the name Amazon, which until now was only known in Germany to a small group of
insiders, a synonym for online book sales," said FCB/Wilkens creative director Jamal Khan in a statement.

The news follows an announcement by the world's biggest book publisher, Germany's Bertelsmann AG , that it would buy half
of Barnesandnoble.com, the online division of U.S. book seller Barnes & Noble Inc. .

Bertelsmann's plans could threaten Amazon's dominance in the United States, where it controls the bulk of the market, analysts
said.

Bertelsmann also plans to expand in Europe with its BOL online book sales project. BOL will be launched in Germany, France,
Britain, Spain and the Netherlands on November 15.

FCB/Wilkens said it would in the next few weeks place full- page ads for Amazon in leading magazines with teaser slogans like
"Kama Sutra around the clock" and "A murderous mood at your doorstep", along with informative texts.

The agency did not provide information on the size of the account
