>>the Sony Drive does not compete with Zip drive
I really believe that the product that should be scared of Sony drive is the LS 120.<<

Barney -

I agree with you partially. I believe that the HiFD drive is clearly the superior choice if you want a backward-compatible drive. It's faster, with higher capacity. With only a couple of million installed world wide, the LS-120 is toast.

If HiFD turns out to work as advertised, it will be a very compelling product. People whose main concern is swapping data with others will still, at first, be more inclined to choose Zip. Price will also be a factor in Zip's favor.

HiFD is very late, yes. But it's not so late that it can't still succeed. What Sony needs is to get some high profile OEMs right away; computer makers who will install HiFD drives in place of the floppies. They need to get a thin notebook model out ASAP. If they can succeed in doing those two things, I believe their product could succeed in supplanting the floppy disk AND the Zip. However, that would still take a couple of years at least.

Iomega would still have an existing base of Zip drive users who would require disks. And there would be at least some market for new Zip drives during the transition period.

And then again, if there is a 250MB, 100MB-disk-compatible Zip drive waiting in the wings, that could significantly change the competitive picture for Sony.

Lots of unknowns still. Way too early to call this game one way or the other.
