IDC and Dataquest will not have 1998 data for quite a while. For current market share I would suggest looking at 1998 data that is available from Cahners, Dell'oro and Vertical Systems...or whoever else you think is credible. Be sure to verify the time frame, how the data is segmented and how it is reported (enduser vs manufacturer). To get a historic perspective and a sense of which vendors are gaining ATM market share in the Service Provider space compare their 1998 data to their 1997 data.

Techwatch --

I can't thank you enough for your comments. I've spent the last hour talking to several research firms and the most enlightening was Vertical Systems. I'll say upfront I can't justify spending $7,900 for their yearly subscription, but I'm delighted to know there's a company out there doing demand-side research. The researcher I spoke with said the supply-side research was about 1% accurate. "They're lies," she said. This because so much depends on the stats given by the equipment manufacturers who all pad their numbers hoping that by claiming market share they'll actually have it.

If you subscribe to Vertical Systems' research, you're given a yearly report based on stats from 12,000 of the largest end-users and then provided updates on demand.

I made the comment that being an individual investor made it difficult to access the kind of statistics they provided and she said 80 to 90% of their research ended up in the public domain in one form or another. She also said their yearly report was just released and over the next couple weeks press releases would be coming out from the top manufacturers listed. They're working their way through legal departments right now.

If you have access to the ATM/WAN stats, I'd welcome any information you can share. Feeling a little like Faust right now. :)

Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.

Regards,

Pat
