Bonds futures sold off supposedly because of hedge fund unwinding of positions. Also, commercials were net short. Also, in order to support a 135 handle on the long bond, dollar needs to be near par. Lots of volatility lately. commitment of traders report at:

Scroll down through beans and oats til you see bonds and see that commercials are short, approximately 70% to 59%. All intertwined with $/yen also.

Closing Financial Futures Report for Friday, October 9, 1998

Debt futures ended sharply lower. Fundamentals had little to do
with today's dramatic sell-off in the Treasury market. Instead it
was fear of repatriation of funds into Japan and the unwinding of
positions that caused the Bond market to touch limit down levels
for the first time since March 8, 1996 when a huge gain in non-farm
payrolls spooked investors.
