Gary: Everybody and his mother-in-law is trying to mimic DELL but the real point is these people can not have it both ways, even if they decide to go exclusively with just the emulating bit dumping the channels it is still not that easy as a lot of people think and besides it is not an option they are considering at this point. Read the recent Forbes article if you get time to get more insight into these issues, the link to which has been posted here a few days ago.

But can CPQ PROFITABLY execute a BTO model without disrupting their revenue stream. To do it quickly would take them 2-3 years and this rapid deployment would be very costly to both the top & bottom lines. At the end of the day, would they be near Dell ?

They would be smarter to set their own course of being the master of channel sales and service. Trying to be everything to all people and follow Dell into BTO/direct could be a major strategic blunder.

Ever heard of Wang ?
