Further on Asia consuming its way out of trouble:

I am reminded of an ancient Chinese anecdote....

In ancient times, an emperor made one of his very rare trips out of the Capital, into a province being ravaged by famine. Sitting in comfort and splendour as his Imperial carriage rumbled through the countryside, he saw people stripping bark off trees. On asking his court officials why they were doing that, they told him:

"Your majesty, these people are stripping bark for food. There is a famine."

Whereupon his Majesty said, "Why don't they eat rice?"

<VBG> - can't resist it.

This about sums up some of the views we are getting from afar. Someone on this thread suggested we should all try feeding our families on $1 a day (without any help from food stamps and soup kitchens, guys!). He's got a point there.
