If you look at the cover letter that went out with the proxy ballots (also available as an EDGAR filing), it expressly mentions the possibility of a 2:1 split. I assume AOL has uses for the additional authorized shares in the 1.2billion, employee options, convertible debt financing like a couple of their recent deals, possibly acquisitions. Traditionally companies have liked to keep their stock price around $50 a share. Individuals can buy it as can institutions. I would guess AOL has a high level of individual, rather than institutional, shareholders. In any case, a split of some sort is in the wind.
