Steve Tobak, vice president of marketing at Cyrix's parent, National Semiconductor, said, "We're landing OEMs as fast as we are capable of supporting them."

That has largely left Intel's relatively higher-priced "low-cost" chips out of the hottest-selling systems at retail during the critical back-to-school season.

Advanced Micro Devices touts market share figures showing it pulling ahead of Intel in the sub-$1,000 system market for the first time, startup rivals are biting at AMD's heels, claiming even its prices will be too high in a further-eroding market.

Rise Technology, which is slated to unveil its new basic-PC microprocessor this week, says it will target the market segments that even AMD would prefer to avoid.
