Nice PR from CBS Marketwatch today...

Individual bets

But gamblers might be tempted by Alexei Izyumov's tastes of Russia. Izyumov, director of the Center for Emerging Market Economies at the University of Louisville, contended Russian stocks have been beaten down so badly that a lot of the big caps suddenly look sweet.

Izyumov said Russia's largest wireless telecom company, Vimpel Telecom (VIP), is trading at less than two times earnings, making its price down right cheap. The stock's high for the year was 59 7/16, which it reached in early May; Friday, it traded up 1 7/16 to 7 3/8.

Not that I'm picky or anything, but it actually closed at 8 9/16!

Alex, I read that people are having a hard time buying food, and I saw (pre devaluation) a picture of a vendor changing the sign for melons from one ruble to two rubles...extremly cheap in comparison to north america,(as much as $8.00 for a melon) so it makes me think that $3.00 would be a large sum in Russia. The press being what it is, are the regular folk able to eat and pay heat and phone bills without problems? Best, Savant

Gospodin...

Thanks for the background details. Let me add more information. When I said "nobody", I should have clarified I was referring to corporate/business accounts trying to pay bills with barter.

The currency risk in ROS and VIP is all the greater because of devaluation. Too bad they CAN'T get paid in dollars rather than rubles. This makes it even more difficult for ROS to upgrade equipment, which is predomiantely form the Soviet era. VIP does have the advantage of new equipment but the disadvantage of a higher price point.

Anyway, I hope you continue to provide info on developments in Russian telecom. I'll do my part with my contact.
