I have a friend who works as a chief of staff for a German parliamentarian. He sends me e-mails He says those in the German government are really worried about what's going on in the United States. Given the extremely serious nature of the global economic meltdown--which is really the important issue people should be discussing--they're concerned that the domestic political turmoil here prevents the U.S. and its global financial arms--the Bretton Woods institutions--will not be able to respond.

This is my analysis: It may be tough to figure a way out of the mess, but the least that the U.S./IMF can do is issue reassuring words about the possibility of change of policy or plans in the works, etc., which they have failed to do as of yet. Instead you've got Robert Rubin and the rest of the Clinton administration on the defensive, afraid that admitting any mistakes in the past with regard to Indonesia, the Asian Tigers, and Latin America would give the Republicans more political ammo.
