I sometimes wonder if in the long run it wouldn't be best for people to the left of the political spectrum if Clinton were ousted.

Borzou, I am struck by your explanation for the above, namely that 1) Clinton's "touchie-feelie liberal appearance" merely masks the reactionary policies he actually pursues, while 2) under a President Newt, people would at least know what they were dealing with (i.e., would "see the government in its wretched, ugly, and inglorious nakedness").

The reason I am struck with it is that it is so similar to the remarks by Barbara Ehrenreich (formerly of Time Magazine, now with The Progressive), quoted in that piece ("Clinton is More Conservative than Reagan or Bush")I posted here recently to support my contention that "genuine" leftists really despise Clinton. Ehrenreich makes exactly the same argument, and also plumps for a Newt-Dole, or Dole-Newt, presidency. Sort of a variation on the old "the worse it is, the better it is" approach.

Did you read that piece? If not, check it out (scroll down to the middle for Ehrenreich):

I must say, that as intriguing as the Newt-Dole idea is, I don't buy it. Right now, in my opinion, we need a President who can unite the country, and only a ho-hum middle-of-the-roader can do that. Somebody like your friend William Weld, whom you mention in another post. (And if this thread accurately reflects the mood of the country, I would say we need uniting more than anything else!!)

As for foreign reaction -- well, of course this is really hurting the rest of the world. America is distracted at the worst possible time. I knew this was going to happen, which is really why I did not want to see us get sucked down into this bottomless impeachment pit(it was not because of any love for Clinton). The damage is going to go far, far beyond the borders of this country, and then will boomerang right back upon us. I am convinced of it, even though normally I am no pessimist. :-(
