Hi Mozek,

I owned msft for some time. Sold at 104 a while back. Please check post 9926 from John. Do you have anything to add or subtract from that post? Thanks in advance.

mozek, >>I'm surprised that your asking Cheryl since she works for Sun.<<
I generally try to lurk for awhile to get a feel for a thread before
posting to it, however I haven't had the luxury of the time to do that. That
being said, I haven't found anything remotely untoward in cheryl's answers
to myself. In fact, I have been very impressed by the dialogue on this thread.

>> If you don't mind an opinion from someone who might have an idea.<<

Sure I'd love to know .

>>My honest opinion is that I think Microsoft knows what they need to do
with NT 5.0. Sun, Novell, and others are scared s***less that it'll be a
raging success, and I believe it will.<<

I think that Microsoft knows what they have to do too, but I'm wondering how
close execution will be to the goal set for NT 5.0. I'd be scared too, even
if it's not even close to a raging success this time around.

>> Will it be reliable out of the gate? I believe so. Will there be a
service pack? Probably so.<<

I'm a neophyte in the O/S area and I don't know quite what you mean by
reliable. Are we talking strictly in the enterprise "mission critical"
area or the consumer desktop arena also. In the enterprise area I take
reliable to mean, no excuses, anytime for glitches.
If you were a CIO would you be satisfied with an "I believe it will be
reliable" answer. or would it have to be "I bet my job and reputation on
this product??

>> Even if it takes until after 2000 for NT 5.0 to really take off in the
marketplace (and I mean REALLY take off), NT will continue to take market
share away from Sun and other Unix vendors.<<

Doesn't Microsoft, as well as every O/S company have to start from scratch
to prove that it is dead reliable on the IA-64? I guess I mean will NT5.0 be
run with its 32 bit code on the Merced as is?

>>I know Linux is an excellent system, and while it does have RAS, I don't
think it's going to catch up to NT in usability. NT on the other hand will
be as reliable and scalable as any Unix on the market.<<

I've heard many hi end tech guys say that Linux is great for various reasons.
It seems to me that is what an O/S is supposed to be all about(RAS) for top end
systems. I don't see the advantage to NT 5.0 except for great backup support
from Microsoft. What do you mean by usability? Linux guys seem to have no problems using Linux, in fact they crow about what they can do with it.

>>Of course, I work for Microsoft, and you might consider me biased even
though I'm really expressing my honest opinion.<<

I'm sure its your honest opinion, but sometimes company options can make one
more "honest" than others.<g>. The usual grain of salt thing...

>> always the occasional Microsoft surprise.<<

Can you give a hint?

>>Rudedog's posts have been closest to the mark.<<

Yes rudedog has had some beaut posts recently on this thread.

stak

BTW, are you on the NT 5.0 team?
