"Cash" Cards
I contract at Bank of America in Concord, CA, and they have been conducting "cash card" for two years at the technology center. A small convenience store, coffee car, and cafeteria have the machines "on campus." From personal experience, the machine that is used to debit/credit the card makes all the difference. An early version required you just put the card in the "slot". Cashier rang up your purchase, you saw the math subtraction take place, card popped out. Fast, fast, fast. No change, no wallet -diving. Excellent...liked to use it.
Second machine added a red button. And a difficult insertion scheme. Frustrations abounded. These are all above-avg citizens, intelligence-wise, yet lots of bungling the "play" (self included). Popularity has dropped very very noticeably.
Moral. Limit the steps. No buttons, please, for card holders (It is irritating in the same manner as "do you really want to log off?? read these adverts!!)
Suspect Manhatten trial had "red button " machines.
According to Economist, real future is machines that scan iris for ident. 100s times more accurate that fingerprints. Can scan from several feet away. Couldn't forget your driver's license! Except if you had glass eye!!
Last note: Cash cards very successful in Europe. New version can be scan even if in your briefcase!! as you pass through turnstiles to get on train!
