5. If there is to be no announcement on the 21st, then there will of course be no
acquisition-related buying in the 10 days preceding the 21st (except to the extent that
LU does not already own 4.999% of some target identified by it.)

Gary,

You are absolutely right! LU has been eyeing ASND/COMS/CSCO for over a year now. They may already own 4.999% in the low 20's!

:-)
Jeff

I think Ascend is LU's first choice. If they paid 20 billion for the company it wouldn't be too much given the build-out that is going to take place over the next few years.

Lu's CEO said it himself yesterday. '500 billion by 2001' and LU only has a 10% market share.

Why not get right into the DATA game - at the core - cut the BS, and buy Ascend.

Personally I would like to see Ascend go it alone for a couple of years (and catch some of the pending hypergrowth, and hopefully a few stock splits!)

In any case, nobody is going to lose holding this baby either way.

Good Luck to All
Pat Hughes

Bottom line: Look for unusual volume and pricing strength in potential targets between now and the 21st.
My Dear Sherlock "Gary" Holmes,
How have you been. I see your mind is as sharp as ever. Out of the "potential" LU targets I only own 1 as of now, coms. I almost bought some asnd last week but was caught off gaurd when the price went low enough and I missed my entry. You know I'm not a EE type and dont know too much about IP, switching, packets, etc. etc. but, and I may get some sh*t for this here, from my standpoint I also don't see LU buying asnd. I just cant see paying upwards of $12B-14B for $1.6B yearly revenues. It may still happen, go figure.
Regards,
fuzfo

Gary, I don't think LU will start to accumulate any ASND before they negotiate a deal with Mory. They don't want to drive the market price up before negotiating a buyout price with Mory. Only if they thought they might make a hostile tender would they try to accumulate shares now. I don't think a hostile takeover for a tech stock like Ascend is very probable.
