To all--Does anyone recall if there were sewer back-ups in Toronto last year when the ice storm took out electric power? I recall reading that the Auckland Central Business District suffered flooding, some of it from overflowing sewers and the clean up was expected to be costly. This issue is important to me because of the public health consequences.
-----I recently spoke with a friend who went to a y2k community preparedness meeting. The tone of the meeting was set by Paloma O'Riely's Cassandra Project op ed piece which can be read on y2knewstoday.com.--The "we all can't head for the hills and must sink or swim together with our neighbors because what will they think of us when it's over" yaddah...yaddah...yaddah...I firmly believe Cassandra has underestimated the public health threat to communities. I tried discussing the sewage disposal issue on the Cassandra boards. Many people who responded to my concerns became alarmed as they had not thought much about what happens after they flush the toilet. I gave up the discussion due to the clunky nature of the chat software.
-----The upshot is my dear friend who has access to a home on well and septic outside of her medium size CA city is not planning to go there because she's convinced it is tantamount to "heading for the hills" and all the negative "surivalist" tags associated with that. I've told her she's got it wrong and that Cassandra may be promoting community preparedness based on some false assumptions (at least from a "home" and "neighborhood" location perspective.) Better safe than sorry. Paloma may be sinking or swimming with her neighbors in raw sewage. I don't think she's aware that this can make people very ill and kill them.
-----If you any info regarding the sewer situation in Toronto, even anecdotal, please let me know.
