"A good insult makes a point and
has a modicum of wit. The best insult make the
target think "Ohh, good one. The son of a
bitch!!".

Let's not get all dewy eyed with this "can't we all just get along?" stuff. Rough and tumble insulting discourse is as American as baseball.

Yes, if it's face-to-face rough and tumble insulting discourse. Personally, I am no Quaker, and there is nothing I love more than a big loud yellin', hollerin' donnybrook over such safe topics as religion and politics. My favorite epithet, by the way, is "donkeyhead." But it is all in good fun, and you can see that by the body language, by the laughter that accompanies the brawl, and so on.

Cyberspace is different. After all, you cannot play baseball or even watch it in cyberspace. In cyberspace, the words come out all flat and sour on the page. Even when people sprinkle their posts with <ggg> and smiley faces, you can't always tell whether they are being sarcastic, or whether they really ARE trying to be "funny."

Cyberspace multiplies misunderstandings, and creates real rancor.

Personally, I find that elaborate "witty" insults can be even more obnoxious than simple, to the point, insults like "idiot."

My heart overflows with love and charity for all the people on this thread, even those who would break into my apartment at 2 a.m., drag me into a truck, and drive me to the football stadium to await torture and execution if they had a half a chance.

That's what I love about the American way. Even if we hate each other's guts with a violent passion there's no reason we can't shop at the same malls. I'll go to the Body Shop to get non-animal-tested soap and drop by Borders for the latest Chomsky. You'll go to the sports department at Sears to get a rifle and Circuit City for a new home alarm system. We'll all meet afterward at the food court for burgers and cokes.

Love and kisses to all.
