I agree small companies are risky. However many small ones with new technology are successful in growth for a period of time. But I have never seen a balloon that wouldn't burst. There is a periodicity in value perceptions and we are still on the downward swing of the pendulum. Index your money in industry groups which show promise.

This will protect you from investing too heavy in a company with cooked value. I like Dollar General for steady growth in bull or bear market. People do shop for value at Walmart, Kmart, Family Dollar and Dollar General regardless of good times or bad.
