Chip,

Thanks for the recommendations. Seems like Quake II is the # 1 most recommended. I promise to get some practice before any due diligence activities. :o).

Installation went without any problems on the creative card. Initial observations is that the 2D graphics have improved about double over what I had and web page loading is surprisingly faster...I wasn't expecting that. I downloaded the screen saver, voodoo lights...very nice!

I also downloaded the surfdemo and get and average fps around 31; I have no idea how that compares to anything else. The only 3D game I've tried out briefly was NHL98; adjusted the options for 3D acceleration; no crashes and noticably improved. I'll have to ask my son to try it out and get his impressions; he has spent more time on NHL than I have.

The only complaint I might have has nothing to do with Banshee. The colorific setup was odd, in particular the color reference card that you stick on the monitor. I think I preferred the display (color, contrast and brightness) before I went through the exercise.

Best Regards,
Jim

P.S. As I often do, I forgot to copy the serial number off the card before I installed it. Is there a command line prompt or other way to read the serial number off the card without cracking the case open? Thanks.

P.P.S. The SI server seems to be really screwed up this morning.

Chip, what are your thoughts on Carmack's comments about 3d in PC Gamer?

I'm not exactly sure I understand what he's trying to say. Anybody else feel free to answer if you know.
