Eddie, John -
The channel will build a successful model when they quit trying to copy Dell and instead look at the strengths and weaknesses of their current business practices, and take steps to change them. Some are doing that. CPQ drove a lot of change this year by eliminating the financial support which had kept the channels happy for more than 10 years. It just was no longer something CPQ could support.

That change was caused by Dell. But the things the channel does well (close relationships with small and medium sized businesses, full range of offerings including service, etc.) give them some advantages also. Can they still survive in an environment where 14 days of inventory is a lot (remember, they are used to thinking in terms of months of inventory), and where they have to radically reduce the number of times they 'touch' the pieces? Maybe. We should know the answer before the end of next year, maybe in 6 months.
