DI compresses the files on the partition, needing no size for blank space. If I have a 1 gig partition with 400 megs of files, I can often do about 200 megs for the image file.

Correct me if I am wrong but the inverse is not true. One would need a gigabyte of available free space on the harddrive to restore the 200MB file that was created from the 1 gig partition in the above example.

One needs to consider this when they plan their backups and restorations. The Drive Copy option that I use in Partition Magic creates a clone of the original partition. In the above example the 1 gig partition with 400 MB of files would require a full 1 gig of available free space on a KOT drive.

Due to wasted space in the cloning process using Drive Copy I start my primary partition small and then increase the size as the software load increases. This methodology increases the number of clones that I have available for restoration.

Assuming I am correct about the way Drive Image restores to the full partition size one might also consider a similar strategy with the use of Drive Image.

Does tape restoration work the same way?
