ASB,

It might not be appropriate to discuss why cellular phone makers would "gamble" on VLSI's CDMA+ ASIC on this message board. The marketplace will decide this but I will say that I have heard rumblings that VLSI has at least one customer lined up.

Rather than discuss VLSI specifically, I'll give you an analogy. It wasn't too long ago that INTC investors asked why anybody would "gamble" on AMD or Cyrix. The latest results from AMD, at least, show that they have garnered a respectable share of the market for microprocessors. Monopolies don't last forever when the primary barrier to entry is technology or marketing and I wouldn't be willing to bet that Qualcomm's "monopoly" in CDMA will last forever either. There are a lot of very intelligent engineers in the world and they don't all work at Qualcomm.

Like you said, there are a lot of components inside cellular phones and that plays right into my question. Maurice said no other companies make CDMA ASICs. So my question remains, does Qualcomm have a product that competes with VLSI's CDMA+ ASIC?

Thanks,
Dan
