Tokyo stocks surge two percent in early trade
TOKYO, Oct 12 (Reuters) - Tokyo stocks surged more than two percent in early trade on Monday heartened by weekend media reports that Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi would seek to provision as much as 67 trillion yen for the country's banks.

Stability in New York stocks and the dollar-yen rate also contributed to the optimism, traders said.

As of 0013 GMT, the benchmark Nikkei average had risen 293.38 points, or 2.28 percent, to 13,173.35

''If they convince the markets that they are earnest about this, they may not even have to spend all of the allocated funds,'' said Michael Wilkins, a dealer at Credit Lyonnais.
